Complete boxed set of Mathews on the Game of Whist
24 Counters - Silver Mounted - by Edward Thomason

This set will date to c1824 and is the Silver edition of Thomason’s regular Gilt/Bronze Set.

The texts are derived from Thomas Matthews’ book
“Advice to the Young Whist Player first published in 1804.

The 24 rules of play and etiquate cover all aspects of the game e.g No: 8
“if one calls after he has play’d the adversary may call a new deal”.

The last token insults the father of [ the then ] modern whist Edmund Hoyle, who’s name still reverberates today in the world of playing cards,
"Hoyle so far from being able to teach the game was not fit to sit down with a third rate player of the present day”

An interesting comment from Matthews who seems to have been more focused on writing for younger or less experienced players, helping them improve their understanding of whist, rather than being a publicly renowned top player himself.

The complete sets of either material are scarce; the silver exceptionally so.
