Karl Gerich Original Playing Cards in uncut sheet format

Pack No: 1 EARLY ENGLISH PATTERN
Karl Gerich Handmade Playing Cards uncut sheet of the twelve court ccards 1982

The research on Karl and his individual packs, part of which is quoted below, has been compiled by

... clearly a near mimic of the single-ended pattern used in England until the middle of the nineteenth century.

The pack shows wide eyed, mildly distorted figures holding halberd, flower, sword, orb and mace.

They are crudely etched although beginning to show Karl’s eye for detail.

The hand colouring is in block reds, blues, pink, black and yellow which although uneven at times is an accurate representation of many of the single-ended cards produced.

The court cards are unsuited in this uncut sheet although they bear a strong resemblance in overall design to the cards shown in Hargrave p1812.

Pack No:4 XP8-Patience c1983
Karl Gerich Handmade Playing Cards - uncut sheet

The research on Karl and his individual packs, part of which is quoted below, has been compiled by

... is an “XP8-Patience” sheet of twelve hand-coloured, unsuited, double-ended court cards that Karl derived from the “Frankfurt Pattern”.

This sheet is beginning to show Karl’s ability to work in a fine and detailed manner, which allows him to give tone and depth to the cards he designs.

It is interesting that while he handles the division between the two ends of the cards well in this case he is not consistent. He uses both diagonal and horizontal division although this does not affect the overall pleasing quality to the cards.

The research on Karl and his individual packs, part of which is quoted below, has been compiled by

including the Queen of Hearts with a shopping bag, the Jack of Hearts with a Rubik cube, the Jack of Diamonds with an electric guitar and a smoke
